Nature Heroes - Aimee Howe

This National Lottery Heritage Treasures Day, our Heritage Treasures person is Aimee Howe, People Engagement Officer for the Sevenoaks Greensand Commons project.

Today is National Lottery Heritage Fund's Heritage Treasures Day. Over the years, we have been able to achieve several fantastic projects thanks to the National Lottery Heritage Fun, including Guardians of the Deep, the Fifth Continent Landscape Partnership Scheme, Nature's Sure Connected and Wooden it be Crafty.

More recently, the National Lottery Heritage Fund helped us to deliver the Sevenoaks Greensand Commons project. This project was launched to restore and protect eight commons (nearly 300 hectares) across West Kent. These sites possess pockets of lowland heath, a habitat that is rarer than Amazonian rainforest. Over the 5-year project, our incredible volunteers completed 250 hours of practical tasks every month to restore this precious habitat.

Today, we're highlighting our #HeritageTreasures person and Nature Hero, Aimee Howe, People Engagement Officer of the Sevenoaks Greensand Commons Project. Meet Aimee below...

As the project’s People Engagement Officer, I hosted over 150 free activities, engaging over 3,000 people. Sculpting, painting, photography and more were delivered within schools, community hubs and care homes.

Through allowing people to learn in a relaxed and creative environment, participants were able to explore the Commons through their own unique lens. Guided walks also invited the public to join us on the ground at the Commons to experience their beauty first-hand.

As a final legacy piece for the project, an education pack was released to local schools, allowing future generations to connect to the Commons through history, geography and science.
