Spend a day observing birds of prey. Learn how to identify different species and more about their characteristics, habitats and behaviour.

About the event

Elmley National Nature Reserve is known for its impressive variety of birds of prey, including both owls and harriers. Visitors can expect to see common buzzards, hen harriers, marsh harriers, peregrine falcons, merlins, kestrels, sparrowhawks, little owls, and barn owls. Elmley also offers specialized wildlife experiences focused on owls and birds of prey.

The day will be spent watching birds of prey on the reserve. Advice will be provided on how to observe and identify the various species in the field.

Led by Simon Ginnaw, Ornithologist. Simon is the main Nature Guide and Reserve Warden at the Elmley National Nature Reserve, and has been birding for over 20 years. He regularly undertakes bird surveys, is an international birdwatching guide, and teaches a number of bird-related courses.

Binoculars, notebook and pen, waterproofs, sturdy boots, packed lunch and drinks

"Blue Badge holders are permitted to drive down to the first hide which is wheelchair accessible. We realise that many of our visitors enjoy the walk but need to take it in their own time, so we have placed ‘perching posts’ along the way to allow a rest."
