Alice Hemming Wilder Blean book author

Alice is a UK-based children's book author with over 50 books published in the UK and internationally. We are working alongside her to create a unique and inspiring story book inspired by the Wilder Blean project. The story will even become an interactive story trail at West Blean and Thornden Woods so you can further immerse yourself in this incredibly cute wilding chronicle.

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

Hello! I’m Alice Hemming, a children’s author from East Hertfordshire in the UK, with over fifty books to my name. I started my professional life as a librarian and a website editor but turned to writing after having children. 2023 marks ten years since the publication of my first book.

Is there an animal that you relate to most?

Ooh, this is a tricky one. I think I’ll say an otter, because they have playful moments and quiet, cosy moments. I’m not just saying this, but I also have an affinity with herd animals! I think it’s because I’m a Taurean.

Why did you decide to write a story inspired by the Wilder Blean project?

I’ve always paid close attention to news stories about wilding and conservation and this project is just fascinating. Children really care about environmental issues and books are a great place for them to find out more in a fun way. Also, I’ve never seen a picture book with a bison character before.

Can you tell us a little about which animals we can expect in the book?

Bison, of course! And some smaller animal friends. A woodpecker, lizard, butterfly and even a dung beetle. I want to show how different species can support one another.

What research are you doing for this book?

As well as spending too much time watching videos of cute baby bison online, I’ve had great support and advice from the science team at Kent Wildlife Trust. I’m even planning to seek some input from the children from a local school.

Which celebrity would you love to hear reading this story?

Well, I was lucky enough to have Sir Derek Jacobi reading one of my stories (The Black and White Club by me and Kimberley Scott) on CBeebies Bedtime Stories, so he would be difficult to beat. But if we’re talking national treasures, and seeing as my protagonist in this book is female, I think I will choose Dame Floella Benjamin, who brings heart and humour to every project.
