About the event

On this safari with Ham Fen's Warden, you’ll learn about the once native beaver which were reintroduced to the site in 2001 in an effort to restore the waterways of Kent’s last remaining fen.

Ham Fen is usually closed to visitors, so this a special opportunity to see evidence of these ‘water engineers’, including distinctive gnawed tree stumps, dams and lodges. You'll find out about their ability to slow running water and create pools and marshes, and the benefits this has for other wildlife at the reserve.

More recently, a small herd of water buffalo have been introduced to complement the work of the beavers and other cattle on site. Look out for them wallowing in the waterways and hear about the role they are playing in the rejuvenation of the fen.

Please note, beavers are mostly active between dusk and dawn and, even then, are extremely elusive at Ham Fen. This safari will give you the opportunity to find out about their reintroduction and see the signs of their activity but you are very unlikely to see beavers during the tours.

This safari is aimed at an adult audience, 14-17 year olds may attend with an accompanying adult over 18. Hoping to bring the children? Family Wildlife Watch Safaris are available during school holidays, see https://www.kentwildlifetrust.org.uk/safaris for availability.

This safari will last approximately 3 hours and most of the time will be spent walking or standing. The route is mostly through fenland, and can be very soft underfoot. Sturdy, waterproof footwear will be needed, and clothing suitable for the weather conditions.

Please note there are no toilet facilities at the reserve, and no refreshments are available to purchase on site. You are welcome to bring your own food and drink with you, a bottle of water is recommended.
