Voldemort's herd

Led by our biggest Konik who we have nicknamed Voldemort due to his dark colouring. In the picture below, you can see Voldemort in the middle having a nap, propped up by his nose and surrounded by the rest of the herd.

The ponies eat coarse grasses and scrub, helping to maintain a diverse mosaic of habitats and structure to benefit the widest range of birds, insects, reptiles and small mammals. Their chemical-free dung is key to supporting a wide range of insect life.

Konik and Exmoor herd

Voldemort has six mares in his herd and plays an important part in keeping the band together. Two of the Konik mares are particularly nervous but he confidently leads and cajoles them into staying together when they move to new pastures or if something happens to worry them. This makes them much easier for us to manage.

Voldemort is assisted by his right-hand man, a male who he had for company while they both recovered from separate injuries many years ago. It can be unusual for a horse that thinks he’s a stallion to tolerate other males but Voldemort and his lieutenant are like brothers now (this pair is featured in the picture at the top of this page). Voldemort is now only partially sighted in one eye so he can be a bit easily-spooked on that side.
