High Downs Volunteering Update - December 2022

In November 2022 the hard work of the High Downs volunteers finally paid off with the arrival of four longhorn cattle at Covert Wood near Canterbury. A key part of the High Downs Project was to restore this area of heathland within the Forestry Commission owned complex. Volunteers have worked in all weathers to clear birch scrub using tree poppers, install an electric fence, water trough and signage. The cattle’s task is to graze and browse the coarse vegetation creating light for flowering heathland plants and habitat for reptiles such as Adder. A dedicated team of volunteers are now on a daily rota to check the cattle, and ensure the fence is secure at this popular site for walkers and cyclists.
