Burham Marsh

A tidal reedbed of around 11 hectares on the meandering River Medway.

Burham Marsh is a prime point to observe waterfowl and waders particularly during autumn/winter months; and for birds and plants during the spring/summer months.

The meadows are often grazed so please keep dogs on a lead.

Directions

By Road:
On the eastern banks of the River Medway, north of Aylesford  and west of Burham.
Cars may be parked at Burham Court Church at TQ 717621. A public footpath runs along the river embankment (the sea wall) from which there are good views of most of the reserve and adjacent meadows.

Key site for

  • Typical residents include: kingfisher, cormorant, herons, various species of duck and geese, including  teal, shelduck and wigeon and greylag.
  • Breeding species: reed and sedge warbler and water rail.
  • Wintering species: reed bunting, snipe, redshank and bittern. 
  • Migration species: swallow and sand martin
  • Botanical interest includes the rare marsh sow-thistle and marsh-mallow.
