Event details
About the event
Several years ago, we were able to purchase Polhill Bank with the generous help of the public. We took what was arable land and, through reseeding and conservation work, have now restored it to beautiful wildflower meadow complete with grazing animals, a pond, and hedgerows. Over time and with ongoing management we hope to restore this site to rare species-rich chalk downland. In fact, 6 or 7 of the target chalk grassland (or ‘indicator’) species are now present there.
Now, we're offering a unique opportunity to come and visit the site with our incredibly knowledgeable Area Manager, Alison. This is another way that you can donate towards Protect Polhill, our appeal to purchase 26 acres adjacent to the existing reserve you'll be exploring on this tour - with profits going directly into the pot.
Over the course of 2 hours, we'll have a gentle ramble through the site, with conversation and some species-spotting. Find out from the Area Manager about how the site has changed through time, including the impacts of wilder grazing, and how we're planning to use this as a blueprint for the 26 acres we are looking to purchase just across the road. You can see the proposed land from the bank itself for a direct comparison of arable and land under nature-positive management.
This safari is aimed at an adult audience, 14-17 year olds may attend with an accompanying adult over 18.
This safari will last approximately 2 hours and most of the time will be spent walking or standing. Much of the route follows unsurfaced routes, with lumpy ground and long grass. Ensure you wear sturdy footwear (during periods of wet weather waterproof footwear is advisable) and clothing suitable for the weather conditions. There are no loos on site but there are plenty of pubs and restaurants in the local area, as well as Polhill Garden Centre just up the road.
