We’re looking for volunteers to join our friendly Community Education team based at our Tyland Barn (Maidstone) and Sevenoaks Education Centres to help us deliver a range of outdoor education activities to schools and other groups who visit our sites to explore the wildlife habitats around us. You’ll be working mainly with primary age groups (aged 4-11) and will always work alongside our Tutor team. You’ll help to set up for activities, take part in pond dipping and mini beast hunting activities and walks, act as an additional pair of hands on the day and help us to ensure that young people have fun whilst learning.
It’s not essential to have a background in formal education, wildlife or conservation as we can teach you all that you need to know, but you must be a confident person, able to speak to groups and be happy to be outside in all weathers. It is essential that you are bug-friendly - this isn’t the role for those who don’t like crawly things!
We’ll supply you with training and support throughout your volunteering, and we may ask you to carry out some reading and research in your own time. Due to the training and support that’s provided, we are looking for those who can commit their time to volunteering with us regularly throughout our key season (March – July). We are busiest in the spring/summer months when the weather is better and there is more chance of interacting with wildlife.
Volunteers will have the opportunity to learn new skills and approaches to teaching, and it's a great way to gain confidence in working with groups and running activities as part of our Learning Outside the Classroom accredited education programme. We hope you'll have a great time with our team too!
We will usually need you to volunteer from 9am – 3pm on the day of the event that you are supporting. We reimburse volunteers for reasonable travel expenses relating to their volunteering and are happy to provide references for our volunteers.
How to apply: Please complete the application form and return to our volunteering team, we'll be in contact to discuss the role further and invite you along to shadow a session at your chosen session.
