Beginners’ Guide and Introduction to Fungi
About the event
On this course you will take an important first step to understanding this fascinating group. You will learn how to identify some of the larger fungi using physical characteristics. There will also be a discussion on the habitats, ecology and life cycle of fungi.
The morning session will be spent in the classroom with a tutorial covering the physical characters, habitats and identification features of the larger fungi. You will also study specimens provided and identify their physical features.
The afternoon will be spent looking at fungi in the Reserve (subject to the conditions of the year and the abundance of the fungi) and reviewing specimens in the field.
Advice will be given on books and field guides.
Edibility will be considered but this study day is for those wishing to understand and identify fungi - not for the kitchen!
By the end of the session participants should:
- be able to identify some of the larger fungi using physical characteristics
- have some understanding of the habitats, ecology and life cycle of fungi
