Reserves

Practical Conservation

The Kent Wildlife Trust manages over 55 nature reserves in Kent and there are numerous opportunities for volunteers to get involved. The wardens hold tasks throughout the year - weekdays and weekends in winter, weekdays in summer (occasional weekends at Pegwell Bay, Blean Woods and Sevenoaks).

The winter work usually involves scrub management such as coppicing and felling, and other less frequent tasks such as hedgelaying, tree planting, fencing etc. The summer work is more restricted as it is the breeding season, and therefore we cannot undertake any major habitat management work.We are looking for volunteers who enjoy being outdoors in all weathers, like doing practical work, have an interest in wildlife and are happy working within a team of people from very diverse backgrounds.

Livestock

Several of our reserves are grazed by livestock at different times of the year. The wardens would like some help on a regular basis with stock checking across the county, but in particular at Ham Fen near Sandwich and Hunstead Wood near Chartham Hatch. Wardens will give training, but do require volunteers to commit to a particular day of the week in order to produce a rota (generally, the checking only takes an hour or two, although this will depend on the reserve). Volunteers must be willing to commit to a minimum of six months and have the confidence to visit remote sites on their own.
