Spong Wood

An ancient woodland with a rich diversity of plants and animals.

The woodland is regularly coppiced to maintain a rich diversity of plants and animals. The dominant tree species are sweet chestnut, oak, hornbeam, hazel, ash, field maple and willow. Lady orchid, greater butterfly-orchid and herb-Paris can be found on the thinner soils on the top part of the slope. Ramsons, bluebell and broom are all found on the lower slopes. Waymarked paths provide an ideal route round the reserve.

Not Wheelchair accessible. The surface leading from car park slopes, and the access is via rough track. Muddy when wet.

Limited car parking is available outside the village church. No parking prior to Sunday services please! Car park grass. 800m road before 300m rough track. Long walk from parking area to reserve. signboard 1.4m high. Narrow gap to access site
