Saving the Garden of England

Kiln Wood

Location: OS Map 189 TQ 886515: Near Lenham
Post code: ME17 2HS

Between Lenham and Sandway, Kiln Wood is six hectares of mixed woodland.

The woodland consists mainly of oak, hazel and hornbeam with some field maple, willow and birch. Since coppicing in 1979 the diversity of the wood and its ground flora has greatly improved. The stream to the north is particularly interesting. Lady fern, broad buckler-fern and herb-Paris are common. The pond in the northeast corner supports a good colony of water violet and is a great spot for birds such as woodcock and the occasional kingfisher.

There is no parking at this reserve. The reserve is accessible through kissing gates at the main entrance or from the footpath at the north of the site, between Headcorn road and Ham Lane.

Wildlife update

Coppicing in the southern half of the reserve has been undertaken, a wide variety of woodland plants and flowers are now flourishing in the recently cleared areas.
