Saving the Garden of England

Collingwood

Location: OS Map 188 TQ 760292: Near Hawkhurst
Post code: TN18 4RF

Collingwood is a small woodland sanctuary of 3 hectares, 1 mile (1.6 km) south of Hawkhurst.

Parking is limited to only one or two cars. The reserve itself is centred around a lake and has some lovely steep valleys with stepped paths. The wood was planted as part of the Collingwood House estate and, as a result, contains many exotic species amongst the native oaks, hornbeam, field maple, holly, yew and beech. The woods are frequented by tawny owls, and nest boxes are regularly used by tits and spotted flycatchers. The lake has good natural vegetation with water lilies and bulrushes. Moorhens, wagtails, mallard and the occasional kingfisher can be seen using the lake. The lake is well stocked with carp, tench and rudd but fishing is not permitted.
