Sladden Woods

OS Map 179 TR 257428: Nr Alkham
Post code: CT15 7DS

Surrounded and accessed via Sladden Farm, near the village of Alkham.

Seven hectares of ancient chalk woodland, supporting a diverse mixture of hornbeam, field maple, hazel and ash with bluebell, green hellebore and yellow archangel.

Sladden Wood is well known locally as the Horizontal Wood. It was clear felled in 1978 and had a Tree Preservation Order served on the remaining stumps and felled timber. Natural regeneration, together with the decaying wood, has meant that Sladden is once again particularly rich in wildlife.
