Bigbury Wood

OS Map 179 TR 095568 : Nr Canterbury

Within Howfield Wood there is Bigbury Fort – a pre-Roman hill fort and scheduled ancient monument. Some historians think that Bigbury was the site of a battle recorded by Julius Caesar.

The Trust continues to seek further opportunities to expand the site.

Appeal update

Our appeal was based on raising funds to save and restore a crucially important woodland, including the remains of an Iron-Age Fort. We raised a fantastic £44,600 towards this project. This has enabled work to start on securing the boundaries of the woodland to prevent motor biking which was damaging to both wildlife and the Fort. We have been working to secure necessary consents and licenses to undertake the restoration works to restore the woodland to how it would have been 2000 years ago.

A huge thank you to all our members and supporters.
