Saving the Garden of England

Wild about Gardens

ARE YOU WILD ABOUT YOUR GARDEN?

Gardens can be wonderful places for wildlife. It really is easy and inexpensive to create a mosaic of wildlife rich areas - From a simple window box to an imaginatively planted vegetable plot.

So if you’re proud of your wildlife friendly garden, then why not share the secrets of its success with Kent Wildlife Trust?

The 2011 Kent Wildlife Gardening Awards is a partnership between Local Authorities across the county, the Royal Horticultural Society and Kent Wildlife Trust.

It’s FREE TO ENTER and open to ANYONE WHO GARDENS IN KENT, however large or small their plot and whether they are a business, community group, school, allotment, private garden or even a collection of adjoining gardens. The closing date is 30 June.

Kent Wildlife Trust’s volunteer gardening advisors aim to visit as many entries as possible before the end of August. They recommend the gardens for bronze, silver or gold certificates and also give advice. In addition, Gold winners receive one of the trust’s coveted Wild about gardens blue plaques and may be put forward for one of our “special” award for gardens of particular merit such as Best Wildlife Garden in Kent, Best School Wildlife Garden, and Best Community Wildlife Project.

Results will be printed in Wild Kent Magazine.

New for 2011, we are delighted to announce the Best Water Wise Wildlife Garden Award, sponsored by South East and Southern Water. We are repeating the exciting “Dragon Garden” Award, sponsored by KRAG and the Kent Gods Acre Project Award for the best Wildlife Friendly Churchyard. We are now looking for sponsorship for the 2012 awards scheme.

You can enter online by clicking here after 21 March or  telephoning 01622 662012 for an entry form.

We are keen to hear from gardeners/enthusiasts who may be interested in training to become a volunteer advisor. For details contact Maureen Rainey on 01622 662012 or email Maureen.rainey@kentwildlife.org.uk.
