2010 - International Year of Biodiversity
Governments around the world have committed themselves to achieve by 2010 a significant reduction of the current rate of biodiversity loss at the global, regional and national level as a contribution to poverty alleviation and to the benefit of all life on Earth.
Back in 2001, the countries in the European Union decided to go further than this, and agreed to halt the decline in wildlife, with the aim of achieving this by 2010.
For this reason, 2010 has been declared the International Year of Biodiversity as a way of celebrating wildlife and to focus increased attention on efforts to halt and reverse the loss of habitats and species around the world.
