Saving the Garden of England

A White Paper on the Natural Environment

Before the last General Election, The Wildlife Trusts called on Government to produce a White Paper on the Natural Environment, setting out an ambitious new direction for nature conservation.

Kent Wildlife Trust members and supporters were magnificent in responding to our White Paper campaign. They submitted more than 800 individually written responses to a Government consultation in autumn 2010.

Now, the White Paper, entitled The Natural Choice: securing the value of nature, has been published. Find it on the Defra website at http://www.defra.gov.uk/environment/natural/whitepaper/.

The White Paper includes 92 commitments to protect and improve our natural environment, grow a green economy, reconnect people and nature and provide international and EU leadership.

The commitments include halting the loss of biodiversity by 2020 and putting the natural environment at the heart of government accounting, as well as supporting wildlife gardening, encouraging volunteering, and making it easier for schools to teach outdoors.

Go to http://www.playyourpart4nature.org.uk/ to see a message from Stephanie Hilbourne, Chief Executive of The Wildlife Trusts, and to let people know what you think of the Government’s commitments.

We wouldn’t have this important, new White Paper without the hard work of the hundreds of Trust members and supporters who responded to the original Defra consultation – so thank you to all of you who took part. You can read the Trust’s detailed response to last year’s consultation here:
