Learning how to identify trees when they have no leaves! Identification of native broad-leaved trees and shrubs mostly by their twigs, buds and bark.

This study day is suitable for beginners and for those who would like to build their confidence in identifying trees in winter.  This is challenging but possible.

At least half the morning will be spent in the classroom getting to grips with those basic features of winter twigs that can be used as clues to identification. Simplified keys will be introduced and students will be encouraged to use “A guide to the identification of deciduous broad-leaved trees and shrubs in winter” by Andrew May and Jonathan Panter (£6).

There will be a variety of twigs available for practice. The rest of the day will be spent mostly in the nature park where there is a wide variety of native deciduous trees.
