The world record cake, weighing in at 1.290 kg (2,843 lb 15oz), was built by staff and volunteers from Kent Wildlife Trust at Tyland Barn on 22nd April 2008 - taking just 90 minutes to complete.

The Mayor, who presented the official certificate to the Trust’s Chairman, Fidelity Weston, paid tribute to the team when she said: “This is a remarkable achievement and a very appropriate way to celebrate the Trust’s 50th Anniversary.”

Made from a traditional recipe of fat, flour and bird seed, the cake was decorated with 50 candles to mark the Trust’s birthday.

The cake has since been divided into hundreds of portions and issued to members of the public to hang in their gardens as a valuable source of nutrition for birds.
