Flower Power draws nature lovers to meadow
Hundreds of visitors were treated to a rare wildlife spectacle in perfect conditions at Kent Wildlife Trust’s Marden Meadow nature reserve near Staplehurst at the weekend (10 & 11 May).
Thousands of green-winged orchids combined with masses of buttercups to create a breathtaking backdrop to ‘This is Your Wildlife’ - the first in a series of free family events organised by the Trust this summer to mark its 50th anniversary.
Wildlife experts were on hand for guided walks, pond dipping, mini-beasting and small mammal detection as well as professional photographers helping visitors brush up on their photography skills.
Event organiser, Amanda Hamley, said: “This was a golden opportunity for people to fully appreciate the beauty of the Kent countryside and in particular this wildflower meadow of a bygone age. Both young and old had a good time in the glorious sunshine.”
Free portions of the world’s biggest bird seed cake* also proved popular with visitors who took them away for their gardens.
The next This is Your Wildlife event will be held at the Sandwich & Pegwell Bay nature reserve on 21st & 22nd June.
