Biggest ever bird seed cake!

On Tuesday, 22nd April, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of Kent Wildlife Trust, its staff will attempt to construct the world’s biggest birdseed cake from a recipe of fat, flour and birdseed. The challenge will take place at the Trust’s headquarters and visitor centre, Tyland Barn in Sandling, near Maidstone.

When complete, the cake will be transported to a local weighbridge for weighing in the presence of the adjudicators, which will include the Mayor of Maidstone, Cllr Richard Ash.  Measurements and evidence will then be presented to Guinness World RecordsTM for verification.

Kent Wildlife Trust’s Chief Executive, John Bennett, said:

“We believe that this will be a most memorable way to mark the Trust’s 50 years of protecting wildlife in the county. It’s also an opportunity to launch our exciting programme of free family events for 2008, together with the biggest public wildlife survey ever undertaken in Kent.”

The cake is to be divided up into portions and issued to members of the public for hanging in gardens as a valuable source of nutrition for birds. These will be issued free of charge from Trust visitor centres and at a special Maidstone town centre event - ‘This is Your Wildlife’ -on Saturday, 3rd May.

Sponsors of the event include Vine House Farm (Spalding) for supplies of bird seed; Unipet International (Sittingbourne) for supplies of beef suet; Travis Perkins (Aylesford) for the cake holder and Wm. Lillico & Son (Aylesford) for use of the weighbridge facilities.

Kent Wildlife Trust’s patron for its 50th anniversary year is actress, Joanna Lumley.
