A day out with the lambs
As part of its Local Food Project, Kent Wildlife Trust is holding a free, family-friendly open day at its Queendown Warren nature reserve near Rainham on Saturday 15th of May.
Visitors are welcome to this area of outstanding natural beauty between 1-5pm to see the young lambs and to watch a shearing demonstration. Children can take part in a treasure hunt, arts and crafts sessions and have a go at a competition to name the ‘Queendown ram’.
A team from Kent Wildlife Trust will be there to explain to visitors how this internationally important reserve is producing ‘local food’ to help the Trust look after the landscape.
Notable wildlife interest in this chalk grassland habitat includes early spider, man and fly orchids, Adonis blue butterflies, nightingales and cuckoos.
Follow the special signs for parking from Stockbury (just off the A249) or Hartlip (just off the A2). For sat nav purposes use postcode ME9 7XH.
Dogs are not allowed in the lambing fields, including the shearing area, as it can cause stress to the ewes. However, they are allowed on leads in the event field and other fields with livestock. Refreshments and toilets will be available on site.
Local Food is a £50 million funding programme supported by the Big Lottery Fund, which will be supporting food related community projects right across the country.
